First United Federal Credit Union was originally formed to serve the financial needs of the employees of the Leonard Refrigerator plant in 1937. Nash Kelvinator acquired the company sometime in the 1950′s and the credit union changed its name to Kelvinator Federal Credit Union.
In 1984 the credit union merged with United Catholic Credit Union, a small credit union which consisted of 12 Catholic parishes. The credit union’s name was then changed to First United Federal Credit Union to better reflect the combined field of membership. In October of 1996 the credit union moved from its former location across from the Kelvinator plant to its current location in Grandville.
In October of 1999 Southwest Catholic Credit Union merged with us adding another 4 Catholic parishes to our field of membership. In 2001 we welcomed the former members of Light Metals Employees Credit Union into the First United Family.
